For Immediate Release - January 1, 2003 Contact: New Year’s Resolution #2: Serve On a Jury When Called CALA Urges All Americans To Stop the Blame Game With the New Year fast approaching, San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) is suggesting a simple New Year’s resolution that would help end America’s blame game and bring sanity back to our courts. For 2003, CALA is asking citizens to remember that jury service is as an opportunity to help bring fairness and common sense back to our courts, and to resolve that next year they will serve when called. "Under-representation in the jury pool can lead to unfair, unbalanced and even outrageous awards," Andy Kotner continued. "All too often, jurors don’t understand the potential impacts of merit-less lawsuits – including shuttering businesses, lost jobs and as a result, less tax dollars for police, education and community programs from the loss of tax revenue." A report by USC professor Daniel Klerman revealed that 17 percent of all Californians summoned (1.4 million citizens) fail to report for jury service. That's enough to fill more than 93,000 jury boxes statewide. "San Diego County CALA encourages everyone to take responsibility for their own actions and serve on a jury when called. If we all make, and keep, this simple New Year's resolution, collectively we can help bring the dangerous blame game to an end," concluded Kotner. CALA is a nonprofit, grass roots, public education organization dedicated to serving as a watchdog over the legal system and those who would seek to abuse it for undeserved gain. More than 8,200 citizens and taxpayers are San Diego County CALA supporters. This page was last updated on 04/19/05 © 2002 San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse |
