For Immediate Release – December 18, 2002 Contact: New Year’s Resolution #1: Take Personal Responsibility CALA Urges All Americans To Stop the Blame Game With the New Year fast approaching, San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) is suggesting a simple New Year’s resolution that would help end America’s blame game and bring sanity back to our courts. The group is encouraging personal responsibility in response to a prevailing knee-jerk reaction by citizens who choose to file frivolous lawsuits when faced with a reality they don’t like. "In 2003, we ask citizens to resolve to look in the mirror before looking to their lawyer," said CALA President, Andy Kotner. "When you have a problem that stems from poor judgment or irrational decision-making, take responsibility for your own actions. Don’t try to lay the blame on someone else." Kotner said 2002 provided numerous examples of people blaming others rather than taking responsibility for their actions, including: Two teenagers who are suing McDonald’s, blaming their favorite fast food restaurant for their obesity. The girls – weighing in at a combined total of 440 pounds – claimed they did not know that three fast food meals a day would add to their girth. A father sued an elderly storeowner for $2 million after his son set the building ablaze while spraying graffiti. The father sued for carelessly and negligently permitting the store to explode, causing his son permanent injuries. A man who raped a hospital patient sued the hospital for his "pain and suffering," claiming the hospital had inadequate security for its patients and visitors, allowing him to commit the crime. CALA is suggesting this resolution because, when the legal system is abused, we all pay in the form of higher prices, clogged courts, and lost jobs. CALA is a nonprofit, grassroots, public education organization dedicated to serving as a watchdog over the legal system and those who would seek to abuse it for undeserved gain. More than 8,200 citizens and taxpayers are San Diego County CALA supporters. This page was last updated on 12/23/02 © 2002 San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse |
