San
Diego, CA - San
Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse
(CALA) today launched a new campaign to educate consumers on how we
all pay for lawsuit abuse by distributing hundreds of specially designed
mirrors in the community. The
small pocket mirrors unfold to reveal the message:
“Object
in mirror is closer to being sued than appears”
The
message is a sobering reminder that lawsuit abuse is a rampant problem in
California, and that no one is immune.
“Even
if you aren’t the direct target of a frivolous suit, lawsuit abuse
affects you in the way it impacts your neighborhood and your community,”
said "Andy" Kotner,
President of San Diego CALA. “Frivolous
suits against your city or the state drain resources that could be used
towards parks, education or other services.
And your tax dollars must go to fighting these suits.
We all pay, and we all lose.”
Kotner
added that frivolous lawsuits also pose a threat to health care access,
jeopardize jobs and keep innovative new products off the market.
“In
many ways, the average American is the ultimate victim of every frivolous
lawsuit ever filed. They deserve to know that, and they deserve
representation from their elected leaders that will protect them from
being the victims of lawsuit abuse,” Kotner said.
CALA
is also distributing the “Stop Lawsuit Abuse” mirrors as a reminder to
citizens of San Diego County
that the odds of being sued personally or knowing someone who has
been sued are high.
According
to the most recent statistics from the National Center for State Courts,
there were over 15 million civil lawsuits filed in 1999; or one lawsuit
filed for every 18 people in the United States.
On
a different scale, that equates to a lawsuit filed every 2.08 seconds -
the equivalent of one lawsuit with each blink of the eye.
San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse is
a nonprofit, legal watchdog group whose mission is to educate consumers on
the costs of lawsuit abuse in order to create a climate for common-sense
legal reform, and serve as a watchdog group over those special interests
who seek to abuse the system for financial gain at the expense of
consumers.
