San
Diego, CA - A
former Survivor contestant who didn't win the $1 million dollar prize has
taken CBS and the show's creator to America's real life tribal council, or
in this case, tribal "counsel," by filing a lawsuit and further
applying the law of the jungle to our own court system.
According to the
Associated Press, Stacey Stillman, a San Francisco attorney, has filed a
lawsuit against CBS Corp. and Survivor's executive producer, Mark Burnett,
claiming other contestants were coerced into voting her off the island to
showcase older contestants, thereby appealing to a larger audience.
CBS has since filed a $5
million countersuit against Stillman, claiming that she is guilty of
breach of contract, extortion and defamation.
"It's a sue-happy
jungle out there," said Andy Kotner, President of San
Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA). "We can't wait to
see how the vote turns out on this one."
CALA is a nonprofit,
grassroots organization dedicated to educating consumers on the human and
financial costs incurred when the legal system is abused for greed,
harassment or publicity. More than 8,000 San Diego County residents are
CALA supporters.
