San
Diego, CA - The
Board of Directors of San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse
(CALA) has named Adrienne
"Andy" Kotner as the group's President.
Kotner
has served as the nonprofit organization's Executive Director since
January, 1999. Prior to that
she served as a CALA volunteer from 1997 - 1998. Her volunteer activity
grew out of a sense of relief that an organization existed to address the
problems within the civil justice system.
Kotner's
frustration with the legal system began 25 years ago when she became the
victim of a frivolous lawsuit. "There is something wrong with a legal
system that stacks the deck in favor of the plaintiff," said Kotner.
"Without investing a dime of their own money, a plaintiff can find a
contingency fee lawyer who will file a lawsuit.
Yet it's almost impossible to find a lawyer who will defend a case
for a contingency fee. Therefore,
it is often cheaper for a defendant to settle a case, even though the
lawsuit may be frivolous."
Previous
to her full-time roll as CALA Executive Director, Kotner was a Marketing
Consultant for KPRZ
1210 AM Radio. In addition,
she has over 16 years experience in medical office management.
For over 20 years she has served the San Diego community in various
fundraising capacities helping numerous charitable/nonprofit
organizations.
"'Andy
has been an extraordinary asset to our organization," said CALA Board
Chairman, R. Alan
Smith. "She has elevated
the visibility of CALA and the cause of civil justice reform to new levels
in the community. In
recognition of her vision and leadership skills, the Board decided to give
her the additional authority as President of the organization."
In her
new role, Kotner will continue to be responsible for grassroots activism,
fundraising, management, board development, community programs, and media
activities.
CALA is
a nonprofit, grassroots organization dedicated to educating consumers on
the human and financial costs incurred when the legal system is abused for
greed, harassment or publicity. More than 8,000 San Diego County residents are CALA
supporters.
