Lawsuit Abuse Essay/Scholarship Contest Approaches Deadline

San Diego, CA -  The February 28th deadline for the second annual high school essay/scholarship contest sponsored by San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) is fast approaching. The contest deals with the importance of personal responsibility in the civil justice system. Cash prizes in the amounts of $1000, $500 and $250 will be awarded to the finalists selected in a county-wide competition.

All high school junior and seniors in San Diego County are eligible to enter the contest by submitting a 3-5 page typed and double-spaced essay on the topic of "Does Lawsuit Abuse Undermine Principles of Individual Responsibility?" The essay contest is open to any ability level student and the essayist is not required to be college bound.

"The focus of the essay contest is to get young people thinking about what kind of impact lawsuit abuse has on their pocketbooks, society and our economy. Our youth have been conditioned to look to lawsuits as the only way to solve even minor grievances," said Andy Kotner, President of San Diego CALA. "It is a well-known phenomenon that abusive or frivolous lawsuits have become big business," said Kotner.

Students currently in their junior (11th grade) or senior year (12th grade) can obtain contest rules and essay guidelines by contacting their school or the CALA office. All entries should be submitted to: CALA Essay Contest, 1761 Hotel Circle South, Suite #120, San Diego, CA 92108. Entries must be postmarked no later than February 28th, 2001. All essays will be pre-screened by CALA officials for content criteria before going on to the final judges. CALA will announce the winners at the May 4th award luncheon to be held at the Mission Valley Hilton Hotel.

San Diego CALA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, grassroots, public education organization with over 8,000 supporters. CALA's Mission is to inform consumers about the costs of lawsuit abuse and ensure the legal system is used for justice, not greed.

For further information on the essay contest, contact President, "Andy" Kotner, at (619) 295-6059.
