ESSAY TOPIC:

Does LAWSUIT ABUSE Adversely Impact

Your Family?   Consumers?

and/or Your Community?

 

CONTEST RULES

Participants must live in San Diego County and be a High School Junior or Senior

Essay MUST address civil lawsuits, not criminal matters.  It would be helpful to include the following in your essay:

  • Definition of “Lawsuit Abuse.”
  • Give at least 3 examples of the hidden costs of abusive lawsuits.
  • Use example(s) of real life lawsuits to illustrate your points. 
  • Give 1 - 2 examples of reforms that could help prevent lawsuit abuse.

Some examples of websites that might assist you in your research include:

Essay “Mechanics”: 

  • Essays must be 3-5 pages in length.
  • Double spaced, typed using 12 point font.
  • And MUST include an index/bibliography of all web sites, source materials and/or quotes used.

  • Submit eight (8) paper copies of your essay to:

  • DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE ESSAYS!  Attach a cover sheet with the following information:

·         Student Name, address, phone, & e-mail.

·         High School name, address, phone, fax and name & e-mail or fax of teacher or counselor who encouraged your participation. 

San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) will publicly announce scholarship winners by June 30, 2007.  Cash awards will be presented at a gala luncheon in June, 2007 (exact date to be announced).

Essay winners must be present at the CALA Scholarship luncheon to claim their cash prizes.

All essays received will become the property of S.D. County CALA and may be used for promotion and/or public education purposes at the discretion of the CALA President and Board of Directors.  Your name and likeness may be used for promotion purposes. 

Family members of CALA Board of Directors and Contest Judges are not eligible.
