CALA's 2004
Scholarship Winners
FIRST PLACE
We are happy to
announce that Erika Palmer a Junior at San Pasqual
High School is the First Place Winner of the 2004 $1,000 Scholarship.
In her Essay she stated, "... Juries are not and have not been the full
solution to the foolish usage of litigation in America. Change must be
enacted in both society and in the legal system. In our current format,
many unsubstantiated and unreasonable cases are tried, to the detriment
of the defendant and the courts. A growing movement of concerned
citizens against senseless trials is fostering the necessary reform of
American mentalities. Juries have discouraged some lawsuit abuse, but
further action is needed to change the irresponsibility that initiates
frivolous litigations. A concerted effort must be made by citizens to
solve disputes outside the court ...". |

President of Coles Carpets and Co-Chairman of Citizens Against Lawsuit
Abuse (CALA), congratulate CALA's Second Place
$500 Scholarship Winner, Dewi Harjanto, a Senior at Northwood High
School.
In her Essay she stated, "...Few will
dispute the statement that juries are a vital example of democracy in
action. Whether or not jury service serves to discourage or support
frivolous lawsuits is another question altogether. Some believe that
'sympathetic juries who think nothing of making government pay' are only
encouraging tort lawyers to pursue ridiculous cases. It is somewhat
idealistic to assume that jurors are well informed, totally impartial
arbiters." |

President of Coles Carpets and Co-Chairman of Citizens Against Lawsuit
Abuse (CALA), congratulate CALA's Third Place $250
Scholarship Winner, Joseph Munoz, a Senior at University City High
School. In his Essay he stated, "... The only way to completely
stop lawsuit abuse is for there to be a complete reformation of the
legal system to make suing someone tougher. The jury system is not the
answer to the problem, it is part of the dilemma. |
